Si se somete a un aumento dr\u00e1stico de la temperatura, como en el caso del fuego, el acero pierde su estabilidad.<br \/>\nDespu\u00e9s de solo 5 minutos de exposici\u00f3n al fuego, el acero alcanza m\u00e1s o menos 500\u00b0C. Esto representa la temperatura cr\u00edtica para este material. Despu\u00e9s de 10 minutos de fuego, la construcci\u00f3n de acero se enoja y se colapsa sobre s\u00ed misma como una castillo de cartas. El acero se expande aproximadamente de 0.012 mm por metro de longitud y grado de temperatura. Para una temperatura de 500\u00b0C, esto significa un alargamiento de 6 mm por metro. La capacidad de conducci\u00f3n de calor del concreto es 2.1 W \/ mK, comparado con 60 W \/ mK del acero; este es un factor importante a considerar cuando hay componentes como el hormig\u00f3n armado y, en particular, el hormig\u00f3n prefabricado.<br \/>\nLos agregados de piedra caliza no pierden resistencia mec\u00e1nica, si no est\u00e1n por encima de 750\u00b0C, cuando el calor desintegra la caliza en cal y di\u00f3xido de carbono.<br \/>\nEl problema es el contenido interno del acero y el papel principal es la protecci\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica de la cubierta de hormig\u00f3n.
