Reaction to Fire
Italian regulation
Furniture or non-building materials
The fire safety standards in Italy regulating passive fire protection refer to DM 26/06/84 and the subsequent DM 03/09/01 ‘Classification of Reaction to Fire and homologation of materials for the purposes of fire prevention’, alongside DM 06/03/92 concerning fire-retardant coatings: ‘Technical and procedural standards for the classification of Reaction to Fire and homologation of fire-retardant coatings applied to wooden materials’. The definition of Reaction to Fire is the degree to which a combustible material contributes to a fire and applies to furnishings, upholstered furniture, stage props and curtains.

European regulation
These standards are supplemented by the new European Regulation (EU) 2024/3110, ‘Construction products regulation’, which is closely linked to DM 10/03/2005 and DM 25/10/2007 concerning ‘Classes of Reaction to Fire for building products to be used in works for which fire safety requirements are prescribed’, which sets out the procedure for classifying products (CE marking) in terms of their fire reaction when incorporated into structures required to hold a CPI (Fire Prevention Certificate).
