This law regulates fire safety in shipbuilding. The MED/3.18b test – Coating systems for roofing materials and floor coverings with limited flame spread – sets out the requirements for flame spread on wall, ceiling and floor coverings. Firewall fire-retardant paints, which comply with these sections of the FTP Code, ensure that materials do not contribute to the spread of fire and meet the safety criteria for merchant ships, cruise ships and other large vessels. Compliance with the FTP Code is essential for obtaining the MED (Marine Equipment Directive) Certificate, which is required for vessels operating internationally.
